How to lose friends...

In a typically well thought out move, Buck House has decided that it cannot be bothered to send any of the cast of the national soap opera to attend the funeral of the national hero of one of the nations Betty S-C-G reigns over.

And lo and behold, our Kiwi friends know an insult when they see one, and it is the front page of one of the NZ dailies:

"Buckingham Palace has decided not to send a member of the royal family to Sir Edmund Hillary's funeral in what will be seen as a snub to one of the country's greatest legends".

Which idiots are advising them on that one? I thought we were supposed to be embracing the Anglosphere these days.

Ed

There's very little sign that, as a nation, we care about the Anglosphere. Hence Broon's cosying up to China when there's at least as good an argument for ensuring our links with India and the Commonwealth should be in good order.

But you're right - Buck House has had, and continues to have, some appalling advice. If I were a Kiwi I'd be feeling snubbed.

It gets worse - It gets worse - Betty S-C-G's vicar in NZ, Governor General Anand Satyanand "will represent her "both officially and personally…This exceptional arrangement reflects the personal and historical associations of the Queen with Sir Edmund from the beginning of her reign".

Gosh, those Kiwis will be so honoured by this 'exceptional arrangement', won't they ?

HM should go herself. I can't think of a good reason not to. It needn't be a long-winded State Visit type affair after all it's all part of her realm so it's no harder, constitutionally, than popping down to her local parish church.

She is getting on a bit, I'll give her that, but she is the Queen of NZ, and it is not as though she will be flying cattle class.

If not her, what about one of her brood? - I do not suppose any of them have anything more important to do.

Meanwhile, a comment from the NZ Herald's website:

"Yes they should - and it should be the Queen herself. Sir Ed is one of the world's greatest explorers of all time, and topped that achievement on her coronation day. To not attend is disrespectful not only to Sir Ed & his family but to the NZ people who had admired him and held him such high esteem. It goes to show that once again (she) or her advisors are out of touch with the members of her realm. And she wonders why Australia & NZ are considering becoming republics".

I dare say that HM the Q of NZ is acting on the advice of her NZ government. Labour, you know.

New Zealand’s Labour Government seeks the establishment of a republic, why should they spurn this opportunity to progress their agenda. Their leader is cast from the same mould as ours.

Mr C - Your exceptionally high dudgeon notwithstanding, this strikes me as creating an excellent precedent. Why should taxpayers worldwide finance overseas junkets of various leaders to attend the funerals of deceased members of their (usually rotten and corrupt)club. In my view such trips are unnecessary and a complete waste of time and money. They don't need to come here and we can happily repay the compliment. The savings in accommodation and security can be put to better use.
